Sjalom in het Hebreeuws. Sjalom of shalom (שָׁלוֹם) is een Hebreeuws woord dat vrede, harmonie, heelheid, volledigheid, welvaart, welzijn en rust betekent. Het woord kan zowel vrede aanduiden tussen twee grootheden (zoals God en de mens, of tussen twee landen), maar het kan ook de innerlijke vrede en de mentale balans van een individu aanduiden. Sjaloom betekent “vrede”. Maar wat is naast die simpele definitie de ware betekenis van “sjaloom”? De gebruikelijke westerse definitie van vrede is, de afwezigheid van conflict of oorlog, maar in het Hebreeuws betekent het zoveel meer.

Betekenis sjaloom Deze wortel wordt ook voor andere woorden gebruikt en heeft ten diepste de betekenis van ‘compleet zijn’, ‘volledigheid’ of ‘vervulling’. Zo is vandaag de dag in Israël het woord voor ‘betalen’: ‘le-sjalem’. Betalen is het weer compleet maken, van de kostprijs.
